If I were a Dead Russian Composer, I would be Pyotr Chaikovsky.

I AM the Real Chaikovsky! Considered by most Westerners to be the greatest Russian composer of all, most late 19th Century Russians think I'm actually too Westernized in my musical tendencies. Despite this criticism, as well as the flak I had to take for my preference of Y-chromosomes, my ballets "The Nutcracker" and "Swan Lake" are upheld as among the greatest and most popular pieces of all time.

Who would you be? Dead Russian Composer Personality Test

In other news, I learned about two exciting, upcoming musical ensembles that have changed my world forever.

1. The Vegetable Orchestra: an "orchestra" composed of instruments made out of only vegetables (carrot flutes, etc.). They play techno and token orchestral pieces (like marches or themes from symphonies). After each concert, the audience is invited to eat freshly made soup created from the instruments used in the concert.

2. Thai Elephant Orchestra: an ensemble of rescued elephants who were trained to play percussion instruments (gong, xylo, marimba, etc). They currently have two CD's available.

Update?

So April brought many showers (we won't get into that), but May is looking much brighter. Minus juries, recitals, and auditions of course.

Just performed M-Ozart Quartet with a new lovely bunch of stroboe quartet. And I actually enjoyed performing... huh.

Highlights of the last month include eating at a Brazilian restaurant, finding a mother duck and nine ducklings, and studying with Alex Klein + Walters.

Greek and Roman Myth

Oboe Party at Jessica's yesterday. We enjoyed watching a video of Walters back in the day, homemade baked goods, beverages provided by Carolyn, and an interesting game of truth or dare. No one's bellybutton will ever be safe again.

Studying for Greek myth midterm. Funny note: my Greek teacher is the son of Dave's clarinet teacher. Now why this took me over six months to figure out, I don't know.

St. Patrick's Day

Friday:
-Celebrated St. Patrick's Day by going clubbing with Dave and friends. Amazing, loved it. Don't think I could do it every weekend and would definitely never go single, but it was fun. Like prom, only better music, less social pressure, and cheaper. And there were still pretty dresses.
-Went back to Dominque's apartment for a birthday party. Passed out almost instantly and then woke up confused by my location. I think I must have been really tired.

Saturday:
-Practiced in the dungeons and went to a recital... the Brahms Trio brought back fond of Tuesday afternoons
-Went to Applebee's and Tim's apartment. Watched Monty Python (Meaning of Life) and hung out with Dave/Tim/Chris/Greg.
-Tim (some of you know him as Hitler) serenaded me with a harp, singing Jewel. Ha! I found a straight male who plays harp! Take that!

Sunday:
-Snuck into a dining hall
-Fell asleep in the parking lot of a Wendy's

All-in-all, a very un-Malia weekend.

HERBIE!!!!

So my dad bought a 1960s white slug bug off of Ebay since he used to own one in college. Turns out, this isn't just any old slug bug... it's Don Drysdale's slug bug (a famous baseball player, my dad is buying it from his widow). The director of the original movie "The Love Bug" (Herbie) was a big fan of Drysdale. The car in the movie was modeled after that slugbug, with Drysdale's jersey number (53) painted on the side.

MY DADDY OWNS THE ORIGINAL HERBIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coffee Cups for Caldwell

My apologies for the February 8th / 9th entry. I was bitter because of the news of Caldwell's death. I truly am sorry.

Here is a picture of the Eiffel Tower that we built in his memory out of his coffee cup collection (1,990 cups). The woman in white on the left is Mrs. Caldwell and this is the entry way to their legendary house. There's a pond and floor tiles that glow lime green in this room.

As I was exploring his house, I kept following old men with khaki pants and blue shirts because I was convinced that one of them would be Caldwell. I could just imagine him turning around... and he would nod at me and the world would be right again.

I came upon a room that I had never been in before and discovered a huge collection of Waterhouse prints. Apparently, Caldwell loved his work as much as I do. Learning that we shared the same taste in art was such an incredible healing experience; from that moment on, I knew that I would always have a little piece of Caldwell with me for the rest of my life.

And much thanks to Dave who skipped school to come and stay with me during this rough time. :)

Arizona

Greetings from Arizona. January and it's almost eighty degrees and not a single cloud in the sky. Go figure.

I have never met people who eat so little in my entire life. These people eat like birds... not only birds, but extremely healthy ones. For example, one day our menu looked something like this: one piece of toast, half an apple, a small salad, and a cup of vegetable/chicken stew. It's good eating, just very limited.

We watched a movie called Baraka. It has no dialogue and no plot really, but it's excellent photography set to interesting music. Go see it; it's the best thing ever.

California, how I missed thee.

Highlights:
-2nd Christmas with Dave and my family (two Christmasses in one year!)
-Church with Dave (no, really. It was a lot of fun to have all of the old ladies ask me how long I had been engaged for. And maybe I just like playing duets)
-Letters From a Nut
-Adventures on a Slippery Pier (yeah, there was this huge wave that knocked me off the pier and then I was saved by a passing pelican...)
-Vegan Food with Ginni, Sam, Aya
-Rubio's with Amanda
-King Kong with Faris and Pratt (although I did get a serious migraine from the movie)
-Shopping Cart Ride through an underground parking lot
-Sum's New Years' Party, Chronicles with Sum, Jamba with Sum... I think maybe just Sum in general...
-Spending quality time with the family. :)

The South

First of all, Merry Christmas from Olive Branch, Mississippi.

Secondly, I feel it is my personal responsibility to inform you that the South is scary. For fun, the high school boys "go muddin'". In other words, they take their pick-up trucks and drive at high speeds through fields and have a contest to see who can get the most mud on their truck. Apparently, a combination of this, chewing tobacco, and a nice ten gallon hat help you to pick up chicks.

I'm completely serious.

I've never eaten so much beef in one short period of time, never talked so much about Walmart, and it's been real hard like not to laugh when locals open their mouth... But I must confess, the Southerners do know how to make a nice cup of tea. Sweet iced tea served in giant plastic pitchers, that is.

ALL THE STEREOTYPES ARE TRUE!!!!!

Oboe Chanukkah

The oboe studio totally crashed Bassoon Christmas. During one of the applauses, twelve of us ran out and played a lovely rendition of The Dreidle Song that quoted the Mozart Bassoon Concerto (kindly arranged by our aural skills teacher). The audience loved it and Sakakeeny (the bassoon teacher) and Caldwell thought it was hilarious as well.

Falsetto Christmas was almost as cool. Random Con boys sang Carol of the Bells and the Hallelujah Chorus... two or three octaves above their normal range...

I *heart* the Con.

Just recovered from food poisoning and another emergency room visit, but all is well. Only a few weeks 'til Christmas! I can't wait to go back to California. Oh, and Chronicles comes out today, but there is no midnight showing so I am sad.

Quote of the day:
Andrew: So how's your boy?
Malia: He's doing well...
Andrew: I saw you guys fighting in the snow the other day. It was cute.
Malia: Yeah, except he's four times stronger than I am so at the end, he could just pick me up and throw me in the snow and I couldn't do anything about it.
Andrew: Well, next time that happens, just call Andrew and he better watch out because I'm Goliath.
Malia: Well, maybe you should watch out because he's David.

Laceration is an awesome word

So I just got back from the emergency room. I slashed the back of my hand open while sharpening my knife to make reeds and had to go and get stitches. Just in case you're wondering, your insides are white. It was really kind of cool to see ligaments and such out in the open and I am proud to have a new battle scar.

My conclusion: Reedmaking is bad for one's health.

South 365

Picked Dave and his best friend, Chris, up from Michigan and I am proud to say that Alex and I have been wreaking havoc with them all weekend.

Let me my give favorite example:
Chris has a $200 giant bunny costume. I drove to Amherst and we used it to pump gas, drive through Duncan Donuts, get hit on/threatened by bikers, and buy feminine products at Walgreens. We also walked through a mob of people during a fire alarm at Oberlin, but because it was Oberlin... no one noticed.

Sunday morning was also exciting... mostly at my expense, but apparently we're all good friends in South 365.

Quote of the Weekend:
(The Environmental Science Building at Oberlin completely generates it's own energy, through the use of the sun and of human waste. So they pay you a quarter everytime you relieve yourself in that building.)
Chris: I think I could walk in there and make a buck twenty-five... it'd be like playing slots.
Dave: More like playing craps.

Got lost in Detroit on the way back to Oberlin, which was unbelievably scary since it was dark, in the downtown ghetto of a big city, and I am a girl. But I am better now.

Cheers to the most awesome college weekend ever!

Bedtime Story

Once upon a time, there was a little girl. Well, not quite so little anymore, but her imagination and drawing skills were comparable to the second graders of nearby lands. This little girl woke up to a day filled with ghosts and goblins and stories of terror, and she was afraid, for she lived on Elm St. Her day got worse as a poor aural skills midterm haunted her three o'clock hour.

When the little girl thought that she would burst into tears, an old love reappeared in her life. One who had traveled from a far away land with tall, skinny trees, a huge body of water that stretched for miles, and eternal sunshine, of which the girl had almost forgotten. The girl was given the key to the heart of her old love and quickly unlocked all four doors... she was greeted with a familiar roar and knew that the rest of her day would be perfect.

And indeed, her old love brought back luck in great numbers. He guided her to the last parking space available, made candied apples appear in the dining halls, and allowed her computer to be fixed by a big happy coincidence. But the best gift he saved for last- for the girl and her old love made a quick turn and flew through the air once again.

What will happen with the girl and her old love? Won't the winter destroy him for he has only a short life left? Will they not perish on icy roads? Will she be able to provide enough food for him as his appetite will now cost her $3 a gallon? Will he be able to protect her as she goes off on adventures?

No one can quite say what will become of the happy couple. But one thing is for sure, they were never complete without each other. And only together, will the girl's luck continue and will her dearest Chewbacca be shown the time of his life.

<table cellspacing="0" style="border: 1px solid #333333;
Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages... CHECK OUT MY NEW LAYOUT!!!!!!

It's not perfected... i.e. text coloring/link words/etc. But... haha. Those of you in the picture are either going to laugh out loud or shake your head and roll your eyes. Those of you not in the picture may either really enjoy it, or hate me forever. Credit goes to Aya for hours of detailed computer editing and for Sum who inspired it.

I stand proud.

Things of interest

1. Bought this awesome Chronicles of Narnia necklace with Peter's shield and an inscription on the back. This movie is going to push me over the edge from Nerd to Geek.

2. Osman took me out to lunch on Wednesday. It was a lot of fun, although I think we're in the awkward transitional phase from student-teacher relationship and friend-to-friend relationship. He was definitely much more open about complaints and sarcastic comments about teaching and he's more perceptive than I realized. I also think he thinks I'm a better oboist than I am, but... that's another story. He wanted me to come and help him run Wednesday's rehearsal, but alas, I was in Irvine. :(

3. Am stuck in Ohio. Chewie was supposed to be here on Monday so I could go up to Michigan, but he's in Kansas now. Aaaaaaarg. I am saddened. I'm thinking about getting a personalized plate (CHWBCCA), but perhaps that would take away from the wonderful "sleeper car effect" that I have learned to depend on.

California

I have this bad habit of bringing cloudy Ohio weather to California during breaks. I'm sorry, guys.

SAT:
Spent quality time with Sum (who drives now!) and Aya (who WALKED to my house from Anaheim/Bellflower-ish to surprise me!!!), went to 2nd St, got coffee and had a mild assortment of adventures crossing streets, harrassing Starbucks, and taking pictures. Sum secretly stuffed my purse with chocolates before I left her. Very cute and surprising and it made my day. And Aya has awesome hair. Very cute and surprising and also made my day.

MON:
Doctors, Haircut, and Sushi. My dad woke me up by busting out his guitar and serenading me in my room. I heart him, his Kermit-the-Frog singing, and his Beatles' renditions. Sushi with Aya was awesome, although I have insulted all Japanese culture by ordering not only the California Roll, but the FRIED California Roll. I think this makes me a bad human being.

One more thing: I DROVE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE JUNE!!!!!!!!!!!!! And to feel the wheel in my hands, 105.1 FM on the radio, and the gas pedal on the floor was absolutely heavenly. I accidently went 40 miles over the speed limit on Loines. Shhhh.
